Dodge Motorhome - Where The Old Meets New!

When the conversation comes up about a Dodge motorhome, you can be forgiven for being a little confused. Are you talking about the Classic Dodge motorhome that was the ultimate in recreational vehicles, way back before they had icon status in the 1960's to 70's? Or are you talking about the current superstar of RV's, the Dodge Sprinter motorhome?

Of course both these are leaders in their field. Take the 1962 Dodge motorhome for instance, which was later called Travco. This vehicle was a leader of its time, being given a revolutionary aerodynamic shape which was possible because of the molded fiberglass-over steel construction that was used. Not only did this eliminate the need for paint jobs, but it also eliminated the problem of dry rot which was a common occurrence in these types of vehicles. At that time, all Dodge motorhome engines were specialized truck versions which had been adapted to run on regular gas. These Class A recreational vehicles were built on the Dodge chassis from 1965 until the late 1980's.

The motorhome market was just in its infancy back in those days, and the Dodge motorhomes were so well built and the engines so reliable that they are still very much in use today. In fact they seem to have a cult following if their advertisements are anything to go by. These old girls are still on people's wanted list after all these years, and if you visit the USA used motorhome market, you will see exactly what I mean. In their day, they represented luxury of the highest standard. The classic layout included a huge bed which converted into a couch during the day, a kitchen table which also folded into a double bed, a single bed, gas stove and oven, fridge and gas water heater, with beautiful timber throughout. The Dodge was known back then for its superb amount of engine power and heavy duty transmission.

Enter today, the Dodge Sprinter motorhome. It really doesn't get much better than these. The Mercedes Benz pedigree says it all as far as engine performance goes, it has the maneuverability of a passenger car, a variety of floor plans, or you can design your own, standard independent front suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and air bags. A soon as you climb behind the wheel it is obvious that it has European genetics. Driving this Dodge motorhome is not like driving a full-size van it is so much better because the stability and steering is brilliant.

But what about the living area? Because of the company's forty-five year association with the motorhome business, the new Dodge motorhome is a combination of thoughtful design and innovative ideas which provides the ultimate in interior luxury. It is actually a pleasure to spend time in the kitchen preparing meals. Nothing has been left out, plenty of well designed storage space, and comfortable sleeping areas. People who are fortunate enough to own a Dodge motorhome will always say that living in it is not only pleasurable but fun, and driving it is exactly the same.
