Diesel Motorhome Deserves Its Good Reputation!
For us, deciding to buy a diesel motorhome was the culmination of years of discussion and our many trips in rental RV's. During this time we were able to answer all the questions we had started out with, plus the ones that came along as our knowledge of the diesel motorhome grew. At first we didn't know much about anything, except our desire to be able to get away from our suburban lifestyle as much as possible. On looking at our options, camping was just too primitive and inconvenient, and this seemed to be the perfect solution. I guess we always knew that one day, when the finances were right and everything else in our life, we would buy a diesel motorhome of our own. Just the convenience of having it parked at home ready to go at a moment's notice was something we had often dreamed about. In those early days of our love affair with the RV way of life, we were very unsophisticated in what type of motorhome would best suit our way of life. This had the unwelcome affect of seeing us in a motorhome that was either too big, too small, or with not enough power. It was a great learning experience though, and one that we now realise has given us an invaluable insight to choosing which diesel motorhome to buy. In the last couple of years we have generally always had positive experiences when we have rented a "diesel pusher" as it is affectionately known. So much so, that we are able to make the decision to buy this type of motorhome with complete confidence. This is a highly prized place to be, as the Class A diesel motorhome that we are really interested in is going to set us back around $145,000. We now appreciate how ill prepared we would have been if we had decided to go ahead in those early days when it came to choosing floor plans, let alone the engine specifications and transmission options. With our new diesel motorhome we are going to pay the extra for the factory delivery process. We have been advised by many new motorhome owners that it is worth paying the premium because there are bound to be little trouble spots which will need correcting. Fortunately after we take delivery, we are able to take the coach away for a few days and live in it, and then return it for a pre-scheduled visit. Evidently factory support and after-sales customer support is as important as quality control and is an essential ingredient in making a good purchasing decision. You may wonder why we have steadfastly stuck to a diesel motorhome when those running on gasoline are so much cheaper. There are many excellent RV's which are run on gas and they are far less expensive to buy and have great carrying capacity. Maintenance, and the regular oil changes are also far less expensive. But the deciding factor for us was firstly the resale value will always be higher, the diesel motorhome rides much quieter because the engine is generally in the rear, and it is able to carry far more weight. For instance we are able to have a china toilet and Corian bench tops in the kitchen and bathroom. Another major consideration is of course the fact that the diesel models we are looking at have super transmissions and Pac brakes which is going to make our mountain driving enjoyable instead of nerve-racking, and everyone knows that this type of homes on wheels, seem to run forever. |
