Are Class B Motorhomes For You?

Will it be a Class B motorhome, or what? This is a touch decision to have to make, choosing between Class B or Class C, particularly if you are new to RV'ing. Well, if it is any help to you, we had to make the decision ourselves, and after many hours of research and then many more hours spent visiting dealers, we decided unanimously on purchasing the Class B motorhome, and it was the best decision we have ever made.

The Class B motorhomes are all pretty good. In fact, they all seem to be nothing short of engineering marvels. How they manage to incorporate kitchens, washrooms as well as showers and then find room to sleep four people is beyond me. We did get the floor lowered even though the roof is raised because my significant other is very tall. But you would think you would be feeling cramped and claustrophobic but in our Sprinter we seem to have more than enough room. The beauty of Class B's are that the motorhome fits into normal parking spaces and when at home, ours is used quite often as a second vehicle.

A Class B motorhome may not suit you though. It always gets down to personal taste as well as suitability. We wanted something that we could take anywhere, something that had plenty of power and pickup for mountain driving, and a vehicle that was going to allow us to comfortably find parking when we went shopping. One of the surprises that we did get with our Class B that we were not expecting was the number of miles per gallon. It is so much better than our old motorhome which chewed through gas like it was lemonade, and even though it too was a Class B motorhome, the interior was cramped and awkward to work in.

Friends of ours have a Class A motorhome and they have the devil of a job sometimes finding parks for it. They have to virtually plan their vacation before they leave to make sure that they are able to be accommodated at the various parks. Not that they move around an awful lot, they just tend to stay put. Thos big things really are not that easy to drive around in, whereas in our Class B we can go anywhere we please. This is exactly what we do too. We keep the motorhome pretty much ready to go at just a few hours notice. Because it is so easy to load and get ready we can decide at nine in the morning that we are going away for a few days, and we will be gone by 11am.

Because we tend to go traveling all year round, when we purchased our Class B motorhome, we decided it would be a good investment and paid the extra to get a fully winterized version. This came with a BTU furnace and heated tanks. When they build the van they also upgrade the insulation which of course helps all year round, and the windows come double-glazed. I will never forget waking up one morning in a National Park way up in Canada, and they had an unexpected cold snap overnight. There we were, covered in snow, cozy and warm with the outside looking like a winter wonderland. There were plenty of other Class B motorhomes that were not looking too good that morning, and some very cold owners.
